April is Autism Awareness Month

Being autistic is beautiful!

April is Autism Awareness/Acceptance Month, let's talk about it. Hi! My name is Arianna and I'm an autistic adult.

Autism, aka Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a developmental disability that can impact a person’s social skills, communication, relationships, and self-regulation.

Some people think autism looks like Dr. Shaun Murphy from the Good Doctor or Julia from Sesame Street. While it may present that way for some autistic people, it can not be said for all. Every autistic person is presents differently with different levels of support needs. I'm saying this is because sometimes we can put our assumptions of what we believe autism to be onto autistic people which may not be the case because we are all different. So it's important to listen to autistic people when they're telling you their needs if they are in the capacity to do so. Providing additional supports such as sensory items,  your time, active listening and patience makes the world of a difference for everyone but especially autistic people. So let's make sure to listen to, support, and uplift our autistic friends, not just this month but  all year round.

Here is a list of some great books featuring autistic characters!
